SOC 2 vs. ISO 27001: Which One, and When
These two frameworks get conflated in sales cycles and procurement reviews. They serve different audiences, and choosing the wrong one first costs a year.
SOC 2 and ISO 27001 are the two attestations most commonly demanded of growth-stage companies, and they are routinely treated as interchangeable. They are not. They serve different audiences, produce different artifacts, and impose different operating disciplines. Choosing the wrong one first — or pursuing both in parallel without a plan — is one of the most common ways security budget is wasted.
What Each One Is
SOC 2 is an attestation report produced by a licensed CPA firm under AICPA standards. It evaluates whether a service organization's controls meet selected Trust Services Criteria — Security is mandatory; Availability, Confidentiality, Processing Integrity, and Privacy are optional. The output is a report, not a certificate, and it is North-American by default.
ISO/IEC 27001 is an international certification standard. It evaluates whether the organization operates an Information Security Management System — a defined, documented, and continuously improved program. The output is a certificate from an accredited body, recognized globally, with surveillance audits in years two and three and recertification in year three.
How to Decide
Lead with SOC 2 when
- Buyers and procurement teams are predominantly North American.
- Sales cycles are being delayed specifically by requests for a SOC 2 report.
- The objective is a sales-enablement artifact rather than a global program.
Lead with ISO 27001 when
- Material revenue depends on European, UK, or APAC buyers.
- A formal ISMS is needed to satisfy enterprise procurement or regulator expectations.
- Internal leadership wants a recognized framework to operate against long-term.
Sequencing When Both Are Required
Most organizations that need both end up doing ISO 27001 first and using its ISMS as the operating substrate beneath SOC 2. The reverse is harder: a SOC 2 program rarely contains the management-system discipline ISO requires, so building ISO afterward duplicates work. The exception is when SOC 2 is blocking active revenue and ISO is a year-out objective — then sequence by commercial urgency.
What Executives Should Be Asking
- Which framework is being asked for in our top-ten stalled deals?
- If we pursue both, what is the integrated control set, and who owns it?
- What is our continuous monitoring approach, independent of the auditor's tooling?
- Are we treating these as one program with two outputs, or two parallel projects?
The Bottom Line
Pick the framework that unblocks revenue or satisfies a binding regulator. Operate one security program underneath. The mistake to avoid is letting the auditor's preferred tooling become the architecture of your security program.
